Producers' Documents

SBS Charter

SBS commissions programs that explore the SBS Charter and reflect contemporary Australia, both on and off screen. We are searching for bold and distinctive stories that prioritise authenticity of voice, push boundaries, challenge perceptions and inspire change.

Editorial Standards

SBS’s editorial standards apply to all content produced, commissioned and acquired by SBS (on all platforms) and provide an essential framework for production companies about the editorial and ethical principles of SBS and industry practices that you need to be aware of. It is the responsibility of all independent producers making content for SBS to read and familiarise themselves with these documents.

The SBS Code of Practice sets out the principles and policies SBS uses to guide its content to ensure that SBS maintains the highest standards of editorial independence and integrity. The Code of Practice covers matters such as accuracy in factual content and privacy.

The SBS Commercial Funding and External Relationships Guidelines operate alongside but separate to the SBS Code of Practice. In relation to production processes, the SBS Commercial Funding and External Relationships Guidelines set out SBS's policies in relation to commercial and external financing activities, including advertising and sponsorship, and to its external relationships, including partnerships. The SBS Commercial Funding and External Relationships Guidelines came into effect on 4 April 2022, and replace the SBS Editorial Guidelines 2016.

Equity and inclusion

As Australia’s multicultural and Indigenous broadcaster, we are committed to ensuring all Australians see themselves and their stories reflected on screen. and that we are leading the way to a more inclusive future for our industry.

The SBS Commissioning Equity & Inclusion Guidelines reflect our unique role and responsibility in the media landscape and aim to create a more level playing field for creatives who have been under-represented in our sector.

Cultural Safety Plan

This Cultural Safety Plan template outlines your commitment to meaningful collaboration with relevant under-represented communities and your plan to create an inclusive environment for staff from all backgrounds, including those from the relevant under-represented communities.

This Cultural Safety Plan template does not apply to all SBS commissioned programs. Please discuss with your SBS Commissioning Editor whether a Cultural Safety Plan is required for your program.
