Policies & guidelines

SBS is an independent national public service media organisation operating under the Special Broadcasting Service Act 1991 (Cth) (SBS Act). The SBS Act imposes a range of duties which SBS must undertake in performing its principal Charter function: '...to provide multilingual and multicultural broadcasting and digital media services that inform, educate and entertain all Australians, and, in doing so, reflect Australia's multicultural society'. These duties include developing codes of practice relating to programming matters and notifying those codes to the Australian Communications and Media Authority, developing and publicising SBS’s policies on the handling of complaints, ensuring that SBS news and information is accurate and is balanced over time, and developing guidelines on matters relating to advertisements and sponsorship announcements and community information.

SBS Code of Practice
The SBS Code of Practice (Code) sets out the principles and policies SBS uses to guide its content to ensure that SBS maintains the highest standards of editorial independence and integrity.
SBS Commercial, Funding and External Relationships Guidelines
Sets out SBS's policies in relation to commercial and external financing activities, including advertising and sponsorship, and to its external relationships, including partnerships.
Elections and Referendums - SBS's Free Airtime Policy
Guidelines on the allocation and use of free airtime for Federal, State and Territory elections.
The Greater Perspective - Indigenous Protocols
Protocols and guidelines for the production of content on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Assists employees, and those working on SBS projects, to understand their role and responsibilities when using social media.
Orphan Works policy
SBS's policy concerning the use of copyright material for which the rightsholder cannot be identified, or is identifiable but cannot be found.
