Dr Andrew Lu AM is a respected dispute resolution lawyer and mediator. He brings to the SBS Board substantial senior executive and governance expertise across the private and public sectors.

For 21 years, Andrew practised as a solicitor with Herbert Smith Freehills and Minter Ellison, and was a casualty and commercial insurance partner with Sparke Helmore and HBA Legal (part of Crawford & Company) where he was also staff partner and head of the Health Industry practice. A sessional member of the State Administrative Tribunal before joining the Mental Health Tribunal as President, he leads a team committed to safeguarding the rights of mental health consumers in Western Australia. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Curtin University Law School.

He has been Chair of Jigsaw, Deputy Chair of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber of Arts and Culture WA, a Member of the Art Gallery of WA Foundation Council and the Fulbright National Scholarship Selection Committee, and a Deputy Member of the WA Reproductive Technology Council. He is also a non-executive Director of the Australian Youth Orchestra, National Gallery of Australia Foundation, Melbourne International Film Festival, and the Arts Law Centre of Australia.

Andrew has a Bachelor of Laws and a Graduate Diploma in Law from the University of Western Australia, a Master of Laws from the University of New England, and a Doctor of Juridical Science from The Australian National University. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law and a Fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours for significant service to the arts, to the Law, and to legal education. He was named Diversity Leader 2019 by the Asian Australian Lawyers Association, and noted in the inaugural AA122 list of the most influential Asian Australians of 2022.
