New to Australia: Learn about Australia’s tax and super systems

Based on previous projects completed by SBS, we approached SBS In Language to create an audio visual resource to inform and educate people with little or no knowledge of tax and super and to cover how the tax and super systems work, getting a Tax File Number, completing and lodging an individual tax return, tax and super for those starting a business and getting the most out of your super.

Tax & Super videos for new migrants

Together we developed a five-part series, New to Australia: Learn about Australia’s tax and super systems. These videos follow the journeys of Ahmad, Ishan, Chinh, Anh, Mei and Layla, as they talk about their personal stories and their experience with tax and super as new and settled migrants.

We consulted with migrant education and settlement service providers around the country to create this series. With SBS’s help we developed stories that are representative of typical life experiences for migrants. These stories explain the tax and super information you need to learn when you are new to Australia.

SBS worked closely with our communications team including facilitating and hosting community consultations to engage our target audiences. Throughout the production process we felt completely informed and found working with the In Language team to be an extremely positive experience. The final outcome has been an outstanding success.

The videos are a great way of connecting with our audiences, and will be used by key migrant education service providers as part of their education curriculum. These education providers are already telling us the stories in the videos are positive, respectful and simple and that they cover the usual questions they get during their education sessions.
